In an effort to do our part in protecting the environment and to supply equipment that is accepted worldwide, exceeding even the most stringent environmental standards years in advance, after 2/1/01 our standard refrigerant will be the zero ozone depleting R417A (AKA NU-22) This refrigerant is interchangeable with R-22, and upon request we will charge your units with the standard R22 for the same price if you wish. |
Flagship Marine has
been constantly monitoring the many new refrigerants for the past
several years, being very cautious about making any radical changes
to our excellent products while looking forward to using a zero ozone-depleting refrigerant.
We have been patiently waiting for the right refrigerant to be made available, and are now ready to make a change that we are confident will benefit the environment without compromising our equipment in any way whatsoever!
A joint effort over the past several years by Rhodia Organique Fine Ltd.(UK) and Star Refrigeration(UK) has resulted in a patented product, marketed under the brand name ISCEON 59, commonly known as R-417A and more recently also know as NU-22 that has the following benefits:
1. ZERO ozone-depleting.
2. Almost identical refrigerant pressures and performance as R-22 - no need to totally redesign our trouble-free systems by using a high pressure refrigerant - over 400 PSI compared to our present, less than 100 PSI refrigerant.
Many of the new refrigerants require totally redesigned components to handle the much higher pressures, including a complete compressor redesign that will be much heavier for the same horsepower. We all know what happens when you have a complete design change!
3. Interchangeable with R-22 - You can always evacuate the R417A and charge with R22 without changing anything!
4. Safer - Working with the existing low refrigerant pressures is inherently safer than working with some of the new, very high pressure refrigerants.
5. Compatible with existing oils - unlike the highly hydroscopic oils some of the other new refrigerants require that will "gum up" your entire system if left exposed to air for as little as fifteen minutes, the R417A is totally compatible with the same, user-friendly, efficient and trouble free oil as R-22. There is no need to change the oil in existing, over-the-counter compressors.
6. Efficient - R417A has almost identical properties to the R-22, which has been a very efficient refrigerant when compared to some of the new alternative refrigerants.
Please remember that you should never check the refrigerant pressure or "top it off". Flagship Marine builds completely closed systems without a single hose,gasket or seal to leak or "migrate" refrigerant molecules into the environment - it is absolutely unnecessary to ever attach gauges to the unit.
In fact you don't need an HVAC licensed technician to install or repair our equipment (check with your local authorities) because almost invariably, problems are limited to the failure of a relay, a time delay, or some other electrical component that is easily diagnosed and replaced without touching the refrigerant system.
Flagship Marine is committed to protecting the environment and will continue to monitor the many new alternative refrigerants that will be available in the future, however we will continue to be very conservative with any changes to our equipment in keeping with our philosophy of not fixing something that's not broken!
We believe this is a permanent and desirable"fix" for this problem, and are delighted to voluntarily make this change well before we are compelled to.
